What to Expect

Timing
Please arrive at Knoxville Spine Surgery Center one hour before your scheduled surgery time. This allows us to complete necessary tasks like registration, preparation, and anesthesia.

Food
The night before your surgery, we recommend eating a light dinner and drinking plenty of fluids. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight before your surgery. This includes avoiding gum, mints, and candies. We also advise against smoking or consuming alcohol 24 hours before surgery.

Hygiene and Dress
Please follow these guidelines:

  • Bathe or shower the night before surgery as instructed by our staff.
  • On the day of surgery, do not wear nail polish, makeup, jewelry, or body piercings.
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing and bring walking shoes.
  • Leave valuables at home.
  • If you wear dentures or glasses, bring a case to store them during surgery.

Transportation
Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery and stay with you the first night.

Medications
Stop taking diet/herbal medications 14 days before surgery and discontinue aspirin, ibuprofen, and Naprosyn 7 days prior, unless advised otherwise. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is okay. Discuss blood-thinning medications with your care team.

Items to Bring on the Day of Surgery
Bring the following items with you:

  • Water bottle
  • Pillows for the ride home
  • Crutches, cane, or walker
  • Post-op shoe, boot, or sling
  • CPAP (if applicable)
  • Advanced directives/living will

What to Expect After Surgery
After surgery:

  • You cannot drive or operate machinery.
  • You may resume your diet as tolerated; if you experience nausea or vomiting, start with clear liquids.
  • Narcotic pain medication may cause constipation.
  • Have a responsible caregiver with you to help and listen to discharge instructions.

Insurance

  • Please bring all of your insurance cards with you for every visit.
  • If you have more than one insurance plan, inform one of our receptionists.
  • Some insurance companies require pre-authorization for visits and procedures, which must be obtained prior to the day of your appointment. Our office staff will assist you with this authorization if needed.

Our billing department is available to answer questions related to your bill. You may call our billing staff at 865-524-1869. We strongly encourage you to call your insurance company directly if you have questions about coverage of neurosurgical services.

If your insurance company is not listed below, it does not always mean that our physicians are not accessible. Some companies access physician networks of different plans with which we may participate. Please check with your insurance company to determine whether our physicians are covered by your plan.

Emergencies

One of our neurosurgeons is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In the event of an emergency, before, during, or after office hours, please go to the nearest emergency room. The emergency room physician will evaluate you and call one of our physicians if needed.

Prescriptions

Because each patient’s care is different, physicians must check patient files before ordering prescriptions or refills. For this reason, requests for prescriptions or refills must be made between 9 am and 4 pm on weekdays. For refills, please call at least 2 days before your current prescription runs out. When you call our office, please have ready:

  • All prescription information
  • The phone number of your pharmacy

Patient Forms

Our practice utilizes Phreesia for patient check-in. Three days prior to your appointment, you will receive a text or email with a link to complete your check-in process. Completing this before arriving will help expedite the check-in process. If you do not complete the Phreesia check-in prior to arriving, please arrive 30 minutes early. Be prepared to provide your current medical insurance information at the time of the appointment.
